Day 11/10 - Chris Potter’s Underground! This was another given to me as a burned CD when I was 18, I think it had just come out? I’ve always loved Chris Potter’s playing (#duh) but the vibe of this record was so new to my conception of modern jazz. It’s so hip and so funky. Check out “The Wheel” for asymmetrical groove city. 🌃 I nominate BAWSElady @lilymischief! 📯🧞‍♀️

Day 10! I’m actually gonna do 12 because it fits Instagram better and because this is fun. Hindemith conducts Hindemith with the Berlin Phil!! I think I found this in the library dollar bin at Boston Conservatory while I was already knee-deep in a self-imposed extra-curricular Hindemith research project. I was curious specifically to hear his tempos which are often debated, and funny enough they’re totally different than the tempo markings on the score — and he’s conducting!! 😂 “Symphonic Metamorphosis” is one of my favorite compositions. I did a transcription project of the second movement for my Third Stream “Brass” Quintet (sop/alto/bari/tpt/tuba) as an excuse to learn the big flute solo on soprano, and also to learn about his theory work with his Series 1 and Series 2. This post is getting way too long-winded, I’m sorry. I just get so excited! Hindemith is a baller and the Berlin Phil has forever been masterful. I nominate up and coming ladyboss @e_grey 🎶🎷👩🏻‍🎤

Day 9 - SINATRA AT THE SANDS. There were three Basie records I was deciding between but this one absolutely wins. The very first live concert I ever went to was the Count Basie Orchestra when I was 13 (#nerd). I bought the ticket myself and I was so excited and proud. I remember going with my friend and sitting in the front row, commenting on how the rest of the audience (average aged ~75) was far back in the auditorium and what a waste it was. After the first few notes we realized why. 😂😂 This band has always been a powerhouse of dynamic energy and the fact that this is a live concert really captures that. Omg it’s just amazing, I can’t go into more detail than that. You probably already know this record but if you don’t GO GET IT RIGHT NOW IT IS REQUIRED. I nominate trombone boss @marielbildsten! 💃🏼 🎺 🎶 💕

Day 8! This is a little bit of a wildcard but I love this record - Ken Vandermark’s quintet record, “Elements of Style... Exercises in Surprise” !! It’s great. Style, indeed - there’s a lot of musical ground covered here. It really resonated with me how effectively the tunes move between groove-based and Free music. I got this as a burned CD once upon a time. Definitely worth checking out. Next up I nominate photo expert, festival-organizing champ, and dear pal @therealnickfrazier! 🎶👋🏻✨

Day 7 - Cannonball Adderley and Bill Evans’s record “Know what I mean?” Wooooo I love this record. I almost chose his record with Nancy Wilson too but I like this one just a little better and I feel like I should try to diversify my selection, right? Cannonball has always been one of my all time favorite saxophone players (def my fav alto player) and this collab is a really stellar one. Check out “Waltz for Debby” - everyone’s solos, the whole thing. 🎷✨🎹 Join in on the fun: I nominate lovely badass woodwind buddy @kerrnie! 💕🐈

Day 6. Guys. This was an on-a-whim record store find and it changed. my. life. Uri Caine Ensemble doing the music of Mahler. I just tried to summarize what specifically I love about it but I couldn’t and got too excited about it again GO GET THIS RECORD it’s magical and if you also love Mahler it’ll flip your whole shit on its head. I nominate bestie and cat dad and saxophone love @tylerbsax! 🎷💥✨

Day 5! 🎪📻 Bobby gave me this record for my birthday in college and it was a game changer. Tom Waits doing all ballads. It’s haunting and beautiful and incredible. Go listen to “Flower’s Grave” and cry. 🌸 💀 🎶 I nominate @nick_maniacal4! Pick yo fav 10 records bruh!💕

Day 3 means we on ta COLTRANE Y’ALL. This record is amazing. Check out the bass pedal action on “Body and Soul” and Coltrane’s solo on “Equinox”. ✨🔥💯 I nominate fellow cat parent and all-around nice guy Klaus @nickbenitezjazz 🎺💕🐈

All-time-record number 2 is this bad boy, #sexmob plays Fellini. All the tunes are the Maestro Nino Rota’s compositions. This record played a pivotal role in the development of my musical identity and its totally worth checking out. Am I supposed to be nominating different people with each of these posts? That seems like a lot doesn’t it? Whatever, here we go; I nominate @roxycoss! 🎷💥💕✨

After a bunch of nominations I’m jumping on the 10-fav-records-of-all-time thing that everyone is doing #sheeple #ontrend #onfleek and I thought I’d start out with this classic, Sonny Rollins’s “The Bridge”. 🌉🎷

Look at us! This photo is probably from ~2013, when The Underground Society Band ( aka the precursor to @dingonek ) had a residency at Boston’s @mideastclub in Central Square, Cambridge. We played music that was a slightly wackier version of what #Dingonek does now. So, like, Avant-garde-flavored chamber jazz music. We put out a record called “A Pickle for the Knowing Ones” featuring a suite of the same name written by @bobspellman and based on the writings of 18th century eccentric Newburyport millionaire Lord Timothy Dexter. Super interesting and strange and awesome. I love these boys and we’ve been playing together forever. Check out the Pickle (book and/or record) and check out Dingonek’s release on #AccurateRecords “Primal Economics” all of those things are cool.
